Knoxville TN, is a rapidly growing city situated on an international waterway. It is located in Knox County, Tennessee, just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, at the head of the Tennessee River navigation channel. The river is part of the Interconnected Inland Water System which links Knoxville with 21 states, the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Linkages may be made to the entire inland waterway system, allowing shipments to be made by water to Houston, Tampa, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis and Little Rock. Present-day Knoxville is located near the center of the Great Valley of East Tennessee.

Its location, in the heart of the valley and at the headwaters of the Tennessee River, make the city a center for the region's economy, culture, and history. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 173,890. It is the county seat of Knox County6, and is the third-largest city in the state of Tennessee. Its nickname is the Marble City, from when it was a major center of marble distribution in the early 1900s. It was named in honor of the first Secretary of War, Henry Knox. Knoxville is also the home of the University of Tennessee's primary campus (UTK). The university's sports teams, called the "Volunteers" or "Vols", are extremely popular in the surrounding area. In fact, the area code comprising Knoxville and the surrounding counties is 865 (VOL). Knoxville is also the home of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, thanks partly to the popularity of Pat Summitt and the University of Tennessee women's basketball team. Today, Knoxville is home to pioneers in industry, leaders in the arts, and traditionalists working to preserve our heritage.
